LEISURE ACTIVITIES WITH ELE USAL ALICANTE

ACTIVITIES IN ALICANTE

GUIDED WALKING TOUR OF THE CITY (every Monday afternoon)

  •  We welcome our new students every Monday and help them get around the city centre. Our guided tours start at ELE USAL Alicante (Rambla Méndez Núñez, 37) and take you through the beautiful streets of the Old Town, the City Hall, the famous “Explanada de España” (Esplanade), the Co-Cathedral of Saint Nicholas and Saint Mary’s Church, the Central Market, and the commercial and leisure area.

GUIDED VISIT TO SANTA BÁRBARA CASTLE (every other Tuesday)

  • Originally built in the late 9th century, Santa Bárbara Castle is one of Spain’s largest mediaeval fortresses.  Located 166 meters (544 ft.) above sea level, Santa Bárbara Castle offers amazing panoramic views of Alicante and Postiguet Beach.  The castle is home to the Alicante City Museum, a must-see to learn about the past of this millenary city.

GUIDED VISIT TO THE ARCHAEOLOGY MUSEUM OF ALICANTE (MARQ) AND THE MUSEO DE HOGUERAS (every other Wednesday)

  • Awarded Best European Museum of 2004, a visit to the MARQ will help you better understand the history of Alicante and the civilizations that once inhabited this land.
  • The Fogueres Festival Museum offers a real walk through the most international festival in Alicante, the “Fogueres de San Juan”, celebrated in late June.  The Fogueres are big monuments made of cardboard and wood placed all over the city for a week, until they are finally burnt down on June 24th each year.  If you are not going to be in Alicante on that day, a visit to this museum will give you a taste of this spectacular festival.

CYCLING TOUR: ESPLANADE, MARINA AND POSTIGUET BEACH (every other Wednesday)

  • A tour that will show you Alicante’s window to the Mediterranean Sea. On the Esplanade, you will find some of the most emblematic buildings in the city, the Carbonell House and the Real Casino, and the Auditorio de La Concha, which hosts several concerts and performances with free admission over the summer.   At the Marina, you can visit a replica of one of the ships that took Columbus to America.  Postiguet Beach is one of the best beaches in the Mediterranean.

FLAMENCO DANCING (every other Thursday)

  • An enjoyable way to get some notions of flamenco dancing while you enjoy tasty tapas and our most popular wines.

COOKING PAELLA (every other Thursday)

  • Paella is an internationally-known rice dish from Spain.  It originated in the fields of Valencia, but today it is made in every region of the country.  There are as many versions of paella as there are cooks. It may contain chicken, pork, shellfish, fish, eel, squid, beans, peas, artichokes or peppers.
  • We will show you how to cook paella step by step and will taste it together afterwards.  Don’t forget to take notes to impress your family and friends back home.

ACTIVITIES NEAR ALICANTE

VISIT TO WINERY AND WINE TASTING

  • Alicante is a land of vineyards and excellent wines.  We will visit a beautiful winery in one of the best wine-producing areas of the Alicante region and take a tour of the cellars and holding tanks.  We will learn about the wine making process before a tasting of different wines produced at the winery accompanied by delicious tapas.
  • Price: 55 € / person.

ARTISAN SWEETS TOUR

  • The Spanish turrón (made of almonds and honey) is an internationally-known sweet from the Alicante area.  Most of it is produced in Xixona, a small village located 15 km from Alicante.  We will visit a small family run factory in Xixona and will taste the different varieties.
  • In the afternoon, we will travel to Villajoyosa, a charming and historic town that stretches the length of a lovely wide and sandy beach.  It is famous for its pretty coloured fishing houses running along the seafront, and as a centre for the production of chocolate.  In Villajoyosa, we will visit a small family-run chocolate factory, and will take a walk around this historic village.

OLIVE OIL TOUR

  • High-quality olive oil has been produced in the Alicante region for centuries.  We will visit a family-run “almazara” (the Spanish word for mill) and will learn about the cultivation of olives and the process of making olive oil, also known as “liquid gold”. At the end of our tour we will taste different varieties of olive oil.

SNORKELLING ON TABARCA ISLAND

  • Tabarca is a small island not far from Alicante. Once a shelter to pirates and a defence fortress, today its population is under 100 people.   In 1986, the island and its surrounding waters were declared a protected marina and bird reserve, and this is what attracts scuba divers and snorkelers who swim amongst the vast numbers of fish and marine life that surround this little island.
  • We will explore the island and enjoy the snorkelling to discover the beauty of the island’s marine life.

CANELOBRE CAVES TOUR

  • One of the most spectacular caves in Europe, the Canelobre Caves are located in the village of Busot, 700 metres above sea level and on the lower slopes of Cabeçó d’Or mountain.  For thousands of years, water has been creating amazing sculptures that we will discover in our tour.

SERRA GELADA SAILBOAT TOUR

  • Serra Gelada is located between Benidorm and Altea.  We will sail along the cliffs and coves of this nature reserve which once were shelter to pirates.  If we are lucky, we’ll enjoy the company of dolphins.
  • Price: 85 € / person.
